  • I am always joking around with my kids, too much some say. And one of the things I say to them is “Do I ever tell you how much I love you?” And Danielle usually answers in a sarcastic tone, “Um, yes, just about every day.” It’s a running joke but the truth is I can’t help myself. I do love them and love to tell them so and my wife Beth does the same. So this story in The Father Life magazine about how to keep safe and happy kids reassures me that I’m doing some things right.   • A recent post of mine mentioned how I was in favor of President Obama’s move to tie federal funding to teaching reforms. But some friends pointed out to me that it’s not as easy as it sounds. Restrictions placed on teachers and the guidelines in the national No Child Left Behind initiative sometimes force teachers to abandon more creative lesson plans and instead focus on teaching them how to take tests. The University of Riverside recently conducted a study that revealed 84% of teachers surveyed believed No Child Left Behind hindered them rather than helped them.
