Dad’s Morning Brew

  • One of the themes of my column in OC Family magazine and will be for this blog is that sometimes you have to say no to children. They are children after all and they need our guidance and advice in circumnavigating through life. So if one of my children ask me, before their 18th birthday, if they can circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat by themselves, my answer is going to be a definite no. Now some of you may have seen this story about young Abby Sunderland who at 16 is trying to set the world record for the youngest person to sail around the world by herself. I don’t mean to stand in judgment of her parents, who are I’m sure good people. And to be fair, her brother Zac accomplished the same feat at the age of 17. But so many things can go wrong and I just feel like parents need to protect their children, sometimes from themselves. I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

  • See the link below for some dad tips on how to look more, um, handsome. Now I need all the advice I can get in this area so this post was an especially good read for me. I’m finding tip No. 10, Stand Tall, a little hard to fathom though. THE FATHER LIFE

  1. Hi Tony, I’m glad you bring up issues that need to be brought up. Like when it would be likely you would say no to your kids. With that said, remember they have young brains, that are smarter than ours at times. Like when our daughters get together and make up plans(put us on the spot) you know what I’m talking about. They work bothsides so they can get a “yes”. I like how you remind parents that we are the parents and we have to say “no” for the kids own good sake. Keep up the good work.
